Whether due to mobility concerns or other physical limitations, it can become more difficult to get out and about as we get older. This can sometimes limit the number of activities older people can participate in and can even lead to feelings of loneliness or isolation.

However, just because we may be spending more time indoors doesn’t mean that we can’t still have fun and engaging experiences. There are many enjoyable activities for older people that can be done from the comfort of home.

Occupational Therapy for Seniors

Occupational Therapy Activities or the Elderly; Helpful Tips for Carers

Occupational therapy is a method of helping people lead independent and productive lives by allowing them to recover or develop skills needed to complete daily tasks. While occupational therapy can be utilised by those of any age, it has been known to be quite beneficial for seniors who feel as if they are no longer able to meet day-to-day challenges, both physically and mentally.

Occupational therapists will first work to understand an individual’s specific needs, by talking with the client, his or her family members, friends, and primary doctor/physician. They also take into [...]

Social media for the elderly

Social media has exploded in popularity in recent years, changing how we communicate, explore our hobbies and stay in touch with family and friends. It is often associated with young people, but elderly people can get just as much enjoyment and benefit out of using it.

If you have an elderly friend or relative who you think could benefit from social media, here’s a look at the fantastic benefits along with some guidelines to follow.

Into 2016 and beyond

2015 was a year that required a grand solution to a social care crisis that is rapidly becoming acute – and it is unfortunate that this has yet to materialise. May’s General Election was seen as a potential turning point in the sector’s fortunes, and although social care took a back seat on the electoral agenda, it was positive to see a range of parties at least acknowledge that the sector requires radical reform.

The Conservative Party’s victory was a cause for concern for the social care sector, given its track record of cutting services and reducing public sector funding. This isn’t [...]

Caring at Christmas | Prestige Nursing + Care

There’s never been a better time to get into care work than at Christmas. Find all you need to know about caring over the festive season with Prestige Nursing.

In December 2014, research from Age UK showed that over 400,000 elderly people were worried about spending Christmas alone. It’s very concerning that some of the most vulnerable people in society have to spend the festive season without company – especially when you consider that loneliness has been shown to compound some of the issues that elderly adults regularly face. For example, research has suggested that loneliness could accelerate the effects of [...]

Here are some activities your elderly relative can enjoy either on their own or with you.

Shopping

Shopping is a great way to get out and about, so head to the local shopping centre where the weather won’t be a problem. Look in the shops, stop off in the café for a [...]

How will we fund it?

Last week the European Court of Justice ruled that companies must include time spent travelling to and from first and last appointments as working time, where previously this time had not been considered as work. This now means that many employers of care workers, sales representative and tradespeople – amongst others – could potentially be in breach of European regulation if they fail to take this change into account. Experts claim that workers in Britain could now potentially claim for travel time under the National Minimum Wage Act.

While Prestige Nursing + Care recognise that care workers deserve a wage that reflects [...]
