Peter’s needs have changed over the years and the Prestige Nursing & Care team have provided excellent carers for this stage of his life, who engage well with him and manage any difficulties. His smile when they arrive says it all!
This year we are not only celebrating Prestige Nursing & Care’s 80th Birthday, but also Peter Atkinson’s 80th birthday, a client from our Plymouth branch!
On New Year’s Eve, Peter and Diane celebrated 60 years since they met at a dance in the Guildhall. They married in 1967 and have two sons, Mark and Dan and a daughter-in-law Katie. They also have two much loved grandchildren, Mia and Ben.
Pete was always a fit man, he swam in the sea from April to October, loved long walks over the Moors or coastal paths and always had a project on the go, using his engineering skills. After leaving school he had been a mechanical engineering apprentice in the Dockyard, and then went on to do a HND at the Polytech (now the university) and soon thereafter worked on Concorde as a structures engineer for several years. From there, he returned to his marine engineering roots and worked in Bath and sometime after came back to Devonport Dockyard in 1977. His last job was working for the Civil Service, as a manager overseeing refits on the survey vessels.
In 2001, Peter had a brain haemorrhage, which was due to a cluster of faulty blood vessels. He had surgery to clip them but it was unfortunately the end of him being able to work. He lost some of his sight, had very poor memory and needed a carer to be able to go anywhere, as he lost the ability to find his way even in familiar places.
Diane, Peter’s wife, retired early to care for Peter as his condition deteriorated and he was eventually diagnosed with dementia. In 2019, he had a small stroke which affected his speech and he is practically non-verbal now. In 2022, the care agency they were using had difficulty with staffing levels, so Diane approached Prestige Nursing & Care as they had been recommended to her by a friend. It was perfect timing, as the Plymouth branch had capacity to cover the hours requested and they soon had a dedicated team of experienced carers in place to cover breaks in the week so Diane can meet friends, go for a walk or a swim, and recharge her batteries.
