‘We care’ – A day in the life of a Prestige Nursing + Care Carer

The number of over-60s in the UK is predicted to pass 20 million by 2030. With an aging population, caring for older people is an increasingly vital part of every community. Peta Campbell, Prestige Nursing + Care care worker, discusses the challenges and rewards of a career in home care.

Over the next 20 years, The King’s Fund predicts the population of 65-84 year olds is set to increase almost 40%, with the number of those aged over-85 increasing by upwards of 100%. In order for communities to thrive it’s essential that a range of support is available so that every member of that community can lead a full, independent, and dignified life. Quality of life is important to everyone, and it’s crucial that our older population has access to assistance which will help them to live at home for as long as they wish to.

We care…

At Prestige Nursing + Care, our team of care workers is the key to providing quality care to others. Each care worker is a valued member of our network and strives to provide the highest standard of compassionate and quality care. We employ those who take an active role in helping others, people who understand the importance of providing personal, respectful care for your loved one.

Peta Campbell, recent winner of Prestige Nursing + Care’s Employee of the Month, discusses a typical day in the life of a Comfort Keepers care worker and the challenges and rewards of working in the care sector.

Peta who joined Prestige Nursing + Care in March 2014, says:

“It was a total surprise and a wonderful privilege to be named Prestige Nursing + Care’s Employee of the Month. I’ve worked in the care sector for 30 years and I’m fortunate that I love what I do, so caring feels more like a passion than a job. I particularly enjoy the personal approach I’m able to take with each of my clients, it’s great to meet so many different personalities and with each of my clients I find we really enjoy one another’s company. Working with older people who might have health problems such as dementia can be challenging at times but it’s also deeply rewarding. It is such a pleasure when you make progress with a client and realise the impact you have made on their life.

On a typical day I will leave the house around 8.30am to meet my first client. During that time we might share breakfast together before I help them to wash and dress, and then I’ll start with some housekeeping. I’ll also make a cup of tea and before I go and make sure the client has everything they need to be comfortable. Over the course of the day I might see 6-7 clients and every person will have their own specific needs but I love to find time for a chat with each of them. In the evening, I return to see my first client of the day and I might fix them dinner before having a final cup of tea and helping them get ready for bed. My role is deeply rewarding and I love to go home each day knowing I’ve made a difference. ”

Catherine Nott, daughter of one of Peta’s clients, commented on the positive impact Peta’s care has had for her mother:

“We are all very grateful for Peta’s continuing care and devotion for my Mum who absolutely loves Peta and looks forward to each and every visit. Peta is so calm, patient and gentle. It’s entirely down to her that Mum is now on the mend and is looking much better – her gentle persuasion to encourage Mum to eat a bit more is paying off too. Mum’s also absolutely thrilled as Peta has really high cleaning standards – the place is spotless! I honestly cannot praise her highly enough.”
