How to become a senior carer

If you already have experience working as a carer in the health and social care industry, then you might find the role of senior carer to be right for you.

A senior carer provides physical and emotional support to individuals in need but they are also able to manage and supervise teams of other care assistants to ensure the highest standards of care are being provided. At Prestige Nursing & Care, our senior carer positions carry the official titles of Field Care Supervisor or Field Care Manager.

Here you can learn more about how to become a senior carer and the exciting job opportunities we have available at Prestige Nursing & Care.

IS BECOMING A SENIOR CARER RIGHT FOR ME?

Becoming a senior carer is a rewarding career path that allows you to make a positive difference in the lives of those in need and your colleagues. A senior carer’s role requires both the ability to care for others along with the managerial and leadership skills to manage a team of people.

Senior carers are expert carers with extensive experience and often formal qualifications in care work. Senior carers lead, develop and coordinate a team of carers to ensure that they are always providing the highest standards of respect and care.

As a senior carer, or Field Care Supervisor and Field Care Manager as they are called here at Prestige, you will be tasked with supervising a team of carers and providing them with support and assistance, as and when needed. You will carry out spot checks on carers and complete reviews and assessments of their performances when required.

You must also ensure the service being delivered is in accordance with all the relevant policies, procedures and practices of the agency or organisation your work for.

WHAT SKILLS DO I NEED TO BECOME A SENIOR CARER?

Senior carers are required to lead and coordinate teams of people, so you must enjoy and be good at working with others.

While every care agency has different requirements for their senior carer roles, some of the general skills and knowledge you’ll need include:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in supervising/managing others
  • Good team player
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Customer service skills
  • Patience and the ability to handle stressful situations
  • Effective time management and organisational skills
  • Smart and professional appearance

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED TO BECOME A SENIOR CARER?

There are no formal academic entry requirements to becoming a senior care assistant. Many care agencies will require a qualification minimum of an NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Health & Social Care and on-the-job experience before considering a person suitable for a senior or management role. Some senior carers also have nursing qualifications.
