prestige nursing

Message from Jonathan Bruce, Prestige Managing Director

Prestige Nursing has been working with people with learning disabilities for over 60 years and so it was very fitting that our choice for our first ever Charity of the Year for 2009/10 should be Mencap, the UK's leading charity in this sector.

Mencap's role in supporting people with learning disabilities is absolutely crucial and we are committed to raising as much money for them as we possibly can.  Our staff will take part in various fundraising activities from bike rides to quiz nights throughout the year to support Mencap.

Mencap Week

This year, Learning Disability Week will take place from Monday 22 to Sunday 28 June. This year's theme will be Changing Places, Changing Lives. Mencap, together with the Changing Places Consortium, is campaigning for fully accessible toilets - with a hoist, changing bench and lots of space - to be installed in big public places.

Whilst over 100,000 people need Changing Places toilets there are only 85 across the UK. This is unacceptable. Without Changing Places toilets, people are denied the right to access their communities. Sometimes the only alternative to staying at home is being changed on a dirty toilet floor. This is undignified, unhygienic and degrading.

Mencap

Mencap is the UK’s leading charity for people with a learning disability, their families and carers. A learning disability is caused by the way the brain develops before, during, or shortly after birth and is always lifelong.   People with a learning disability find it harder to learn, understand and communicate which affects their intellectual and social development.

Mencap’s vision is a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included.   Mencap works in partnership with people with a learning disability to help them with housing, education, employment and provide community services. We also indirectly support many people affected by learning disability through our campaigning work where we fight for equal rights, change and understanding.
